Segmenting and Blending are important skills for readers to master, but they are often difficult skills for struggling readers. This year my RTI groups were made up primarily of boys; boys who would rather be playing with cars than segmenting and blending. That’s when Road Readers were born. I found a way to combine the kids’ love of cars with blending and segmenting practice.
The child moves the car as he segments the words. When the car reaches the end of the road, the child blends the sounds together to read the word. I found if we practiced the activity first with a picture clue, the students were able to understand the concept much quicker.
This freebie sampler includes one full color blending sheet with three task cards and pictures, 1 black and white sheet with three task cards without pictures, and 1 center sheet with a blending and matching activity. If you like this sampler, you can find the whole product in my TpT store.
